Week 1 | Galena vs Dakota
Galena -
As the 2018 season gets underway, there are a lot of expectations for both Dakota and Galena. Dakota is looking to avenge last year's tight double overtime loss to Princeville in 1st round action. Galena is looking to crawl its way back to the top of the conference, where it has long been a perennial power until the last 2 seasons. Dakota came into Friday night ranked #12 in the state in Class 1A. Galena is in search of their first win since the 2016 season.
It has always been a tough place to play and win, and that place is Chuck Korte Field, home of the Pirates. But on Friday night, it was all Dakota, as they mirrored last year's game in every facet, jumping out to a 28-0 halftime lead, and finishing with a 35-0 win to start the season.
Trey Engelbrecht ran for77 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries, while Aden Cassidy picked up 96 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, and added 4 tackles with 2 INT on defense. Quarterback Josh Clark was 5-for-8 passing for 71 yards and two touchdowns.
This is the start Dakota coach Joe Free wanted, but he knows his team still needs to get things done on the line as their schedule stiffens up entering Week 3. On the other hand, this is not the start Galena was hoping for, but the Pirates still have a lot to prove this season.
