Week 2 | East Dubuque vs. Galena
East Dubuque-
In a week full of rivalries across the NUIC, the two teams from the northwestern most corner of
the NUIC face off in their grudge match. The Galena Pirates took their shortest bus trip of the
year to East Dubuque to face off with the Warriors in a rivalry that they have dominated over
the past few decades. Each team coming off of tough, one sided losses last week had something
to prove for the rest of the season.
After receiving the opening kickoff, the Warriors marched from their own 33 yard line deep into
Galena territory on the back of their workhorse senior running back, Jackson Bowman. After
Bowman slashed the Pirate defense for a 26 yard scamper, quarterback Jon Breitbach hooked
up with receiver Ethan Orcutt for a 5 yard TD pass capping off a 67 yard drive, putting East
Dubuque up 7-0 after Ben Kettering’s PAT.
After forcing Galena to a quick 3 and out, the Warriors were back to work again feeding the ball
to Bowman. Bowman helped to get the Warriors on the fringe of the red zone, where Breitbach
found Orcutt again for yet another TD pass, this one being a 28 yard catch where Orcutt broke 3
arm tackles and waltzed to paydirt. Kettering’s PAT was blocked, making it 13-0 Warriors with
2:53 remaining in the 1 st quarter.
After a rough first possession where Galena gained just 1 yard, the Pirates came out and made
some forward progress, until Galena QB Mickey Lorento had his pass intercepted. Following the
interception, the Warriors stuck to their offensive plan and fed Jackson Bowman the ball, but
this time, Bowman got himself into the endzone, scoring his only touchdown on the evening.
Kettering’s PAT attempt went wide left. Bowman’s score put East Dubuque up 19-0 with 11:21
remaining in the half.
Carrying their momentum from the last drive before the unfortunate interception, the Galena
Pirates showed a pretty dynamic offense that was split almost 50/50 between rushing and
passing. After some tough running from RB Colton Bauer, Mickey Lorento found his favorite
target, sophomore WR Damian Stephanopoulos for a beautiful pitch and catch in the end zone.
Marking the end of scoring for the first half with the score being 19-7 in favor of East Dubuque.
The final scoring in the game would come in the 3rd quarter when Jon Breitbach would find
junior RB Hunter Sherman with a 35 yard bomb. This brought the score to 25-7 in favor of the
Warriors of East Dubuque, which would end up being the final score for the game.
The Galena Pirates would put up 190 yards of total offense on the evening, over half of which
came from the arm of QB Mickey Lorento who finished the night with 12 completions on 24
passes for 94 yards, 1 TD, and 2 interceptions. The Pirate rushing attack was led by Colton
Bauer, who had 59 yards on 18 carries. FB Lane Sasek had 26 yards on 5 carries. WR Damian
Stephanopoulos caught 5 passes for a total of 56 yards and 1 TD.
The East Dubuque Warriors tallied up 275 yards of total offense on the back of leading rusher
Jackson Bowman’s 18 carries for 136 yards. Warrior QB Jon Breitbach completed 4 passes for
75 yards, 3 of those completions being touchdowns.
