Week 1 | Aquin vs Kirkland Hiawatha
Freeport -
The Aquin Bulldogs had a lot to look forward to coming into opening night. They ended the 2016 campaign 10-2 with a narrow quarterfinal loss to Ottawa Marquette to end their season. Looking ahead the Dawgs bring a highly explosive offensive attack, and a very fast defense. Standing in there way were the Hiawatha Hawks, who come out of the same NAC conference that Marquette is in and return from a successful 7-3 season. The last time these two teams met, was back in 1987 in the 2nd round of the Class 1A playoffs that saw the Dawgs win 34-6 as they tried to defend their 1986 title that their own coach played on.
Neither team is defending a title this year, but the Dawgs are prepared for a long season ahead as they are highly touted as the team to beat in the Upstate division in 2017. The start of the game saw Aquin score on their first drive of the season to take a 7-0 lead. In the 2nd quarter the Hawks would answer with a fumble recovery and return for a TD to knot the score up at 7, as the 2nd quarter proved to be a hard time for the Bulldog faithful as they turned the ball over 5 times.
Aquin would respond in the 2nd half however, as they put up 20 unanswered points on their way to a 27-7 win on opening night. Aquin will need to clean up the turnover department as they embark on their next 3 games before the highly anticipated match-up with #1 ranked Forreston in week 5. Aquin will face some good challenges to help prepare them for that game, but they must not overlook their upcoming opponents by looking ahead.
