Round 2: Orangeville vs Martinsville
Orangeville dominates their way into the I8FA semifinals with a 48-20 win over Martinsville
Orangeville - The Broncos opened up their last home game of the season in style in front of a big crowd Saturday afternoon that saw them punch their ticket into the semifinals, cruising to a 48-20 win over #6 ranked Martinsville.
Forcing a quick 3 and out on the first series of the game for the Bluestreaks, Orangeville would take over from their own 28 yard line a the 10:54 mark of the 1st quarter. The very first play for the Broncos saw Gunar Lobdell take a handoff off right tackle for a 42 yard gain and switch field position as they moved into Martinsville territory. They would continue to run the ball at will before Lobdell powered his way into the end zone from 5 yards out. Gavin Roth added the PAT kick to give Orangeville a 7-0 lead with 7:54 to play in the 1st quarter.
The Broncos kept the defensive intensity up, forcing another punt on 3 consecutive plays. An excellent punt by Vicente Herrera would pin the Broncos at their own 5 yard line to start the second series for the Broncos. Orangeville would take to the ground again behind their workhorse Lobdell, with contributions from Carson Rote and Brayden Cahoon to chew up yards and clock. Setting up at the Martinsville 7 yard line to start the 2nd quarter, Lobdell would find his way to the end zone for his 2nd TD run on the day. The kick was no good, but Orangeville had a 13-0 lead with 11:55 to play in the 2nd quarter.
The Broncos defense was relentless all day, pushing Martinsville back for -56 yards for the game. Due to this, another forced 3 and out led to a punt that set Orangeville up at the Martinsville 42 yard line. On the very next play Carson Rote connected with Nate Anderson for a 42 yard TD run, where Nate had to twist off 2 different defenders in opposite directions before making his way into the end zone. Roth would the extra point to give Orangeville a 20-0 lead with 10:06 still to play in the 2nd quarter.
Martinsville would try to go to the air on their 4th series, but Brayden Cahoon would intercept a Sebastian Herrera pass at the Bluestreaks 35 yard line. The Broncos were limited by penalties, but drove down to the Martinsville 10 yard line before settling for a 27 yard field goal by Roth to extend their lead to 23-0 with 5:22 to go before halftime.
Martinsville would catch a stroke of luck as Sebastian Herrera connected with Vicente Herrera on their first play of their 5th series for a 51 yard TD, but Orangeville kept them from scoring the 2 point conversion to keep a 23-6 lead with 5:04 still to play in the half.
The Broncos would then go on a 70 yard drive that Carson Rote would end cap with a 5 yard TD run and give the Broncos a commanding 29-6 lead at the half.
The 2nd half saw much of the same, as Gunar Lobdell would a 38 yard TD run, followed by Brayden Cahoon getting an 11 yard TD run to extend the Bronco lead to 41-6.
Lobdell would add his 4th TD on the day in the 4th quarter to complete the scoring for the Broncos. Vicente Herrera would add TD passes of 63 yards and 25 yards in the 3rd and 4th quarters to end the scoring at 48-20 for a Broncos victory.
Gunar Lobdell would lead the way for Orangeville with 225 yards rushing and 4 TD's. Brayden Cahoon picked up 95 yards rushing and 27 yards receiving with a TD, while Carson Rote added 67 yards rushing to go with his 77 yards passing and 2 TD's. Nate Anderson had 42 yards receiving with a TD.
Orangeville moves onto the semifinals where they will travel to fellow NUIC affiliate Amboy (7-4) for the chance to play for state. The 2 teams met back in week 8 in Orangeville, where the Broncos won 55-6.
