Week 3 | Amboy vs West Carroll
Mt Carroll -
The West Carroll Thunder came into Friday's contest looking for something more, as the season has not got off to the start they had hoped, despite being at the record they expected. The Clippers on the other hand, were looking to get something going after a tough loss last week.
West Carroll would get on the board first, with time running out in the 1st quarter when they blocked a punt and it was recovered by Michael Popkin for the score and an early 6-0 lead.
Amboy would respond quickly as Mitchell McLaughlin found Hunter Zimmerly on a 25 yard TD pass. The extra point was good as Amboy took the lead 7-6 with 8 minutes left in the half.
Like a title fight, West Carroll came right back down the field and entered Clipper territory. From there West Carroll would set up at the 1 yard line where Derek Tracy punched it in for 6. The 2 point conversion was good, as West Carroll took the lead 14-7 with 2:32 left.
However, the fireworks would continue to end the 2nd quarter, as Amboy would take to the air and get back into the red zone. This would set up a McLaughlin to Preston Henkel 5 yard TD pass. The extra point was good, and the game was tied at 14 with 55 seconds remaining.
With 36 seconds remaining before half, Derek Tracy dropped back and found Michael Popkin on a 58 yard TD pass to regain the lead 20-14, which West Carroll would take into halftime.
Amboy would be first on the board in the 3rd quarter, as Amboy drove down the field deep into Thunder territory yet again. This time McLaughlin took matters into his own hands with a 1 yard TD dive. The extra point was good as Amboy took the lead again 21-20.
That lead wouldn't last long, as Tracy would return the favor, and take a QB keeper 59 yards to the house. Once again the extra point attempt failed, as West Carroll clung to a 26-20 lead with 3:20 left in the 3rd.
With just over a minute left in the game, Amboy would put the exclamation point on the game, as McLaughlin found Hunter Walzer on a 25 yard TD pass. The extra point was good for a 28-26 final score in favor of the Clippers.
For Amboy, Mitchell McLaughlin went 17-26 for 302 yards with 4 total TD's. Marcus Winn picked up 157 yards receiving on 12 receptions, Hunter Zimmerly had 71 yards on 3 receptions with 1 TD, and Jake Schaver added 90 yards rushing on 23 carries.
West Carroll was led defensively by Zach King, who had 29 tackles, 16 of them were solo, with 1 sack, and a forced fumble. On the offensive side, Derek Tracy had 94 yards rushing on 9 carries with 2 TD's, and went 9-22 passing for 175 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT.
