Week 1 | Milledgeville vs Amboy
Milledgeville -
Friday night saw what was seen as a good matchup with a predicted low score blow open in the 2nd half, as Milledgeville walked away with an opening night win over Amboy 36-7. The Missiles enter the 2018 season as one of the favorites to contend for the Upstate title, while Amboy is trying to build off back to back 3-6 seasons, but Friday night belonged to Milledgeville.
Milledgeville jumped out to a 14-0 lead midway through the 2nd quarter after QB Jack Munz connected on a 25 yard TD pass to Christian Toms-Smith. Amboy would close the lead to 14-7 with 1:54 left in the 1st half after Mitchell McLaughlin found Marcus Winn on a 48 yard TD connection. Amboy had a chance to tie the game before half, as they had the ball at the Milledgeville 5 with 2 seconds left, but an errant McLaughlin pass to Winn in the flats sailed over Winn's head to preserve the Missile lead at the half.
Lightning struck to open the second half, as Carson Boyer took the opening kickoff to the 2nd half the distance, racing 80 yards for the score just 10 seconds into the 3rd quarter. With a successful 2 point try, the Missiles had a 22-7 lead en route to their 36-7 win.
Nate Rahn led the way for the Missiles with 150 yards rushing on 14 carries with 2 TD's. Cayde Gusloff had 14 carries for 75 yards, and Boyer added to his 80 yard kick return with 51 yards on 9 carries and another score. Milledgeville finished the game with 280 yards rushing on 43 carries.
For Amboy, they finished the night with just 45 yards rushing on 30 carries. Combined with sloppy defensive play, it made for a long night for the Clippers.
