Week 1 | West Carroll @ Dakota

Dakota

It was a slow start in what would turn out to be a defensive battle between the #8 Class 1A state ranked Dakota Indians and the West Carroll Thunder. Both teams would open up with quick 3 and outs. On Dakota's second series they received the ball deep in their own territory and would advance to their own 31 yard line where they were forced to punt.

West Carroll took over with a short field and would once again start in Dakota territory, but this time the Thunder were able to move the ball. West Carroll advanced the ball to the Indian's 6 yard line before Dakota closed the door and forced an errant throw out of the end zone on 4th down. The game would remain scoreless at halftime.

The second half saw the Thunder start at their own 40 yard line, but the drive would stall after 2 penalties. Dakota would take over on their own 12 yard line and would move the ball 88 yards, capped off with an Andrew Wenger 4 yard TD run for the first points of the game and go up 6-0 after a failed point after attempt.

The following drive for the Thunder would see them move the ball to the Indian's 26 yard line before a forced fumble by Wenger would be recovered by Dakota. With 5:59 remaining in the game Dakota would see a drive that took 3 plays for 92 yards. Wenger took the hand off from QB Cade Meier and went 82 yards for an Indian TD. The two point try was good, extending Dakota's lead to 14-0. This proved to be a huge momentum swing in the game.

West Carroll failed to get anything going on their ensuing drive and saw the game end with Dakota in the victory formation.

West Carroll had early opportunities that eventually faded as the game went on. West Carroll is a very tough team that should find themselves playing in the playoffs.

Dakota gained momentum as the game progressed. The offense was slow to get things going, but the offensive line was able to get a big push when needed. Dakota showed that their defense is going to be very good this season as they held West Carroll to 18 total yards in the 2nd half.

For Dakota, I had Andrew Wenger with 18 carries for 199 yards and 2 TD's and a forced fumble on defense, walking away with our player of the game. Matt Holste had 14 carries for 53 yards. Cade Meier was 2-6 for 5 yards and 1 INT.

For West Carroll Kaleb Hartman had 8 carries for 28 yards. Kaleb Plattenberger had 10 carries for 20 yards. Cory Simpson had 7 carries for 34 yards.
