Week 5 | Forreston vs Aquin

September 23, 2017

Forreston -

Coming into the season, the Aquin Bulldogs and Forreston Cardinals were both heavy favorites to win their respective divisions. Last season saw the Bulldogs advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2011, and they came up 3 points short of a potential semi-final match-up with eventual state champion Forreston. This time the Bulldogs would have their chance to square off with the Cardinals.

On Aquin's opening drive of the game the Forreston defense proved very tough, as they forced Aquin to punt. The ensuing snap went over Aquin punter Zac Cummins head and into the end zone, which resulted in a safety. Forreston would then receive the ball, and on the 2nd play from scrimmage Gavin Fuchs tore down the left sideline led by a wall of blockers and scampered into the end zone from 34 yards out giving Forreston a quick 10-0 lead with 9:26 still remaining in the 1st quarter.

Aquin's next offensive possession resulted in a fumble, and Hunter Rogers was their to scoop it up for the Cardinals and run it back for a score, jumping the Cards out in front 18-0, a lead they would take into the 2nd quarter.

Aquin would strike back behind the right arm of senior signal caller Jonah Diemer. Diemer would connect on 19 passes in the first half, resulting in 209 yards and 2 second quarter TD's, but between his first and second TD tosses, the Cards would put up 3 more scores, led by Joe Bowers' 66 yard TD run, and Forreston would take a 34-12 lead into halftime.

The second half would prove to be too much for the Bulldogs, as the Cards would pour on 2 more scores behind the strength of their running game, which racked up 386 yards on the ground behind 91 yards each from Evan Kelsey and Joe Bowers, and 79 yards from AJ Christensen along with 3 interceptions on defense.

Diemer would connect on one more pass play for a TD, but it was a little too late as the Cards pulled away with a decisive 50-19 victory. Diemer would finish the night going 23-45 for 275 yards with 3 TD's. Logan White hauled in 2 of those scoring tosses, while Zac Cummins snagged the other one.
